Character Name ⇒ Cobalt Tribus Castitate
Canon ⇒ Original
Canon Point ⇒ n/a
Age ⇒ 26
Appearance ⇒ On the taller side, with thick, black hair down to his upper back. His eyes are blue-green and he doesn’t have much muscle on him, thinner in the shoulders than he could be.
Character Info ⇒ Each person on the planet of Praecordia is gifted with a soul. It is the task of each individual to cultivate, each lifetime, one of the 29 virtues until all 29 are obtained, at which point the soul ascends to a higher existence, leaving forever the well of spiritual energy that keeps the planet alive (Just think like it’s the life stream). With the cultivation of each virtue also comes more power, so understandably pretty much everyone on Praecordia is on board with this program. They are so on board, in fact. that the majority of souls have ascended and left the life stream, leaving the planet suffering and withering up. The remainder of humanity has clustered around Springs--places where the life stream is particularly present--which are the only viable areas left in which to grow food and live. Souls are also an important part of everyday Praecordian life; even casual interactions involve a degree of intermingling of the peripheral parts of the soul--it’s like breathing; you breath out, and when you breath back in you are breathing back in some of the same air, and some other air breathed by somebody else. The personalities of each Praecordian are partially shaped by the virtues they have mastered in previous lives.
Cobalt has no such influence from his past virtues because he lacks a soul entirely; as a twin, the soul granted at conception went to his brother Copper and Cobalt was slated for death for number of reasons that will become clear. Instead, Copper’s father kidnapped him to live in the boonies.
It was not particularly bad life, but as essentially a social cripple, Cobalt was always taught to aim low. Where most people are naturally graced by their past virtues, Cobalt had to adopt a select few--diligence, patience, and loyalty--which he could faithfully replicate in order to pass for normal. The other virtues--especially the ones that entail interacting with other people, such as kindness and compassion--come to him only with difficulty and reflection. That is not to say he’s incapable of consciously or unconsciously performing such acts, like any person, but he has difficulty recognizing them and difficulty seeing the point. This is half nature and half nurture; his lack of soul means that Cobalt is literally unable to connect with people in the normal way, and he was discouraged from getting too close to the other villagers by his father, out of fear that Cobalt would be found out and killed. Consequently, he feels largely disconnected from people, though he has lived in the same place his whole life. In addition, most people see souls as very precious, personal, and individual. Cobalt, due to the nature of his condition (see Abilities) is so inundated and entrenched in soul bits all the time that he’s depersonalized them, and as a result has trouble treasuring individual people.
The quality and the quantity of Cobalt’s virtues naturally inclined him towards drudgery, and for the most part, Cobalt keeps his head down and does his work and does not seek out people to interact with. To compensate for what his father predicted (accurately) would be a disinclination towards virtue he started Cobalt early reading the humanities (philosophy and literature primarily) and Cobalt spends the majority of his free time reading. Though laconic, he is well-spoken, and would be considered intelligent were he to engage in an actual conversation which, for the most part, he doesn’t. The people around Cobalt tend to think he is polite but a little dull.
Guaranteed to have no real future, Cobalt has been without aim or motivating desire for most of his life, and more or less resigned to be busied with the day-to day things that no-one else wants to do. He devotes himself to a quiet life of taking care of his father and their home and being cheerfully imposed upon by his friends and neighbors. He has known his whole life that, unlike everyone else in the world, he is doomed to nothingness when he dies, and though he has read a lot of philosophy and metaphysics, struggling to come to terms with it, he still tends to seesaw between depression and apathy. Out of consideration for his father, however, he tends to maintain a constant facade of equanimity.
When his father is ritually killed in order to feed the Spring (a pretty common fate) Cobalt’s first impulse is to kill himself--out of practicality more than anything, since he would die a slow death without someone to maintain his seal (See Abilities, again). Unfortunately, he is captured, Shenanigans Ensue, and his twin brother, born and raised to the family governing the Spring decides to kidnap him and use him for Eco-terrorism, using him to drain all the Springs in the world so that he can fulfill his crazy plan of saving humanity. Cobalt goes with Copper for a number of reasons--because he doesn’t want to die and because he is lonely are two big reasons--but mostly, Copper is the first person Cobalt is able to be honest around. His bitterness and anger is allowed to well to the surface, as much because he no longer has to hide the reason for it as because Copper is a giant asshole and can bring out anyone’s bad mood. Constantly provoked by his brother he has become more expressive, opinionated, and outspoken--though not enough to outspeak Copper himself. Cobalt is still fairly meek at heart; he doesn’t have it in him to stand up for himself too much, and the small part of him that craves human connection does not allow him to deny Copper hardly anything.
Abilities ⇒ Cobalt is completely normal as far as active/offensive abilities go. He is an expert at mundane housework--cooking, cleaning, laundry, radio repair etc--and the care and shooting of guns (more specifically, rifles). He is a decent shot and he’s ok in a fist fight, though not very experienced or physically strong.
Cobalt’s special ability is 100% passive--he has zero control over it. He basically acts as a natural reservoir for ambient soul bits. It is entirely natural for Praecordians to ‘leak’ soul and because the metaphysical cavity where Cobalt’s soul should be located is vacant, it starts to build up in him. Anyone who is around him a lot or maintains a lot of physical contact will start feeling weak, more easily fatigued, less vital. He does hit a point of being ‘full’ but it tends to wear on his body if he maintains this state for long--fevers, chills, general exhaustion, headaches, any number of other symptoms. At this point, he needs a third party (his father, then his brother) to sort of empty him out, like turning on a faucet. When he is undergoing this he is a fount of vitality. Wounds heal faster (though not miraculously fast), plants grow healthier, and the people around him feel energetic and vitalized.
